Core Curriculum for Microsystems Acupuncture


This is a common core curriculum for the following Microsystems therapies: Auricular Acupuncture for Detox/Pain/Common Health Condition, Spinal Acupuncture, and Korean hand Acupuncture/Reflexology Acupuncture

General history of therapy

Contra indications

Health and safety

Hygiene

Anatomy of body areas which are to be needled and knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the level required for safe and effective the administration of each Microsystems therapy

Examples of patient case history notes relevant to each therapy

Health questionnaire for patients and student to complete and be checked prior to treatment administration which is specific to the requirements of each therapy

Diagrams and charts to illustrate the anatomy, physiology and indications and uses of each therapy

Explanation of the particular scope of practice for each Microsystems course

Course content specific to each courses scope of practice

Explanations of point location, uses, contra indications and clinical application

Practitioner ethical and professional conduct

How to deal with adverse reactions to treatment

Practical applications of clinical use of therapy

Clinical practice of therapy during class under supervision

Submission of 10 cases studies on maximum of 5 patients seen at least twice for perusal by course leaders prior to certification Student membership of the acupuncture society and student insurance cover to be obtained prior to case studies

An external examiner examines and marks or may review the course leaders assessment on the following criteria: health & safety, competence, ability to understand crucial aspects of effective application of treatment, understand the method of consultation, understand and appropriate client care, understand the issues surrounding 'consent' to treatment, understand the appropriate legislation applicable to treatment, understanding the anatomy and physiology, point location, how to apply treatment accurately and appropriately, ethical understanding and the importance of hygiene procedures, understand the importance of referral procedures, evaluate and review the treatment , understand the importance of giving appropriate home care advice after treatment.
